Un ricordo di Mario Maioli

Gentilissima Giorgina,
nel ringraziarti per avermi contattato via Facebook, ti confermo che ho avuto diverse occasioni di incontro con tuo padre. La prima, quando da studente del corso di architettura degli interni negli anni ’54 ’55, tuo padre ci seguiva. Lo ricordo come persona affabile, paziente e competente nell’esaminare inostri progetti che gli venivano sottoposti. E’ in questo periodo che assieme a un gruppo di allievi architetti amici ho visitato per diversi anni il padiglione della Montecatini alla Fiera di Milano concepito come scenografia teatrale con la partecipazione anche di Achille e Livio e dello scenografo Damiani del Piccolo Teatro. Ne ricordo uno in particolare, molto suggestivo, che integrava spazio, suono e luci in modo molto raffinato e che si ispirava alla natura.
Successivamente, una volta laureato, lo incontravo alle riunioni A.D.I., dove ero stato ammesso come socio.
E’ ancora vivo ricordo di tuo padre e delle sue opere in collaborazione con i suoi fratelli quando in veste di cliente frequentavo lo Splugen in corso Europa. Anche questo concepito in uno spazio anticonvenzionale per la funzione, dove si integravano spazi, luci e impianti tecnici ( impianti di condizionamento a vista, gradinate che conducevano a diversi livelli dove erano collocati i posti a sedere, con le luci che creavano un’atmosfera intima e accogliente); soluzioni certamente innovative.
E’ un vero peccato che lo Splugen non ci sia più, perché con esso è andato perso uno degli esempi e ricordi degli anni ’60 milanesi.
Tra tutte le creazioni dello studio Castiglioni ricordo in particolare la poltrona S.Luca, presentata alla Triennale ( di cui possiedo un esemplare) e li giradischi della Brion Vega.

thank you for contacting me via Facebook. I did have the opportunity to meet your father on several occasions. The first was when I was a student of the 1954-1955 interior design course and your father followed our work. I remember him as a person who was affable, patient and competent as he examined the projects we submitted to him. For several years during this period, I, together with a group of architect friends, visited the Montecatini Pavilion at Fiera di Milano, which was conceived as a theatre set design with the participation of Achille and Livio and the set designer Damiani from the Piccolo Teatro. I remember, in particular, a very evocative one, which integrated space, sound and light in a very sophisticated way and was inspired by nature.
Later, after I had graduated, I used to see him at meetings of the Association of Interior Design, to which I had been admitted as a member.
I still have vivid memories of your father and the works made in collaboration with his brothers when, as a customer, I used to frequent the Splugen brewery in Corso Europa. This venue, too, was conceived in an unconventional space for its function, with integrated spaces, lights and technical systems (air conditioning systems on view, steps leading to the different levels where the seats were placed, with lights creating an intimate and cosy atmosphere); truly innovative solutions.
It is a shame that the Splugen is no longer there, because with it we have lost a unique design creation and memory of the Milan of the 1960s.
Of all the Castiglioni studio creations, I particularly remember the Sanluca armchair presented at the Triennale (of which I own one) and the Brion Vega turntable.
